One of the most instantly recognizable tunnel portals in the world, the Moffat Tunnel beneath James Peak is still an important part of a coal-hauling route from mines at Craig, Colorado to Denver and beyond. How long that will continue to be the case is anyone's guess, as with Union Pacific's acquisition of Southern Pacific in 1997 its value as a through route was drastically reduced.
