In 1964 the Wabash was absorbed into the Norfolk & Western, giving that carrier a highly profitable route from Detroit to the Midwest. Here an N&W freight on former Wabash rails is caught in Springfield, Illinois somewhere between the small downtown Wabash yard and the Chicago & Illinois Midland crossing south of town.
