Clearly the original intention to reserve the Union Pacific's Harriman Cutoff for westbound freights was not graven in stone; here an eastbound heads downhill through the Harriman Road grade crossing at Harriman, Wyoming towards Cheyenne. The merger situation at the time is nicely summarized in the consist: the second unit appears to be former Chicago & North Western (merged into UP in 1995) and the third former Southern Pacific (acquired in September 1997).
