Southern Pacific ran a commuter service along the peninsula from San Jose to the 4th & Townsend station in downtown San Francisco. One of the hallmarks of this operation was the use of double-decker gallery cars, also extensively used in Chicago area commuter service. Today this service is operated by Caltrans.
