Pennsylvania [Penn Central]
South Chicago, Illinois (South Chicago Crossing)
June 2, 1973

Unlike the former four-track New York Central bridge over the Calumet River at South Chicago, Illinois, the Pennsylvania's four track mainline narrowed to two for the massive lift bridge seen here. By this time the Central was abandoned, (although two of the original four tracks remained rusting away in the weeds), as Penn Central chose the former Pennsylvania main for its line from Englewood to near Gary, Indiana, where the former Central and Pennsy went their separate ways. The Chicago Skyway (Interstate 90) is visible at right.
