Even in 1973, when the Penn Central was in the process of being analyzed for the eventual Conrail takeover, its roadbed between Albany and New York City was still immaculately maintained as in this shot from southbound Amtrak Buffalo-New York City train no. 74. This view, taken somewhere south of Albany, faces north from the rear of the train, with the Hudson river on the left and one of the many iced-over inlets on the right.
