Legend has it that Paradise, Montana on the Northern Pacific was originally named "Pair of Dice." It's a nice story; as Winston Churchill once wrote, "If it isn't true, it ought to be." Although the Paradise station itself wasn't much to look at, it was located at the western junction of the scenic Evaro Hill line and the water-level St. Regis freight line, and by that time lucky westbound travelers on the North Coast Limited might well have thought they had been through the Promised Land itself.
