Although most of the great scenery west of Missoula, Montana on the Northern Pacific was to be found on the Evaro Hill line, the freight line via St. Regis along the Clark Fork River saw almost all of the freight traffic due to water level grades. Here at Lothrop is the beginning of a passing siding, as well as color-light signals that seem oddly out of place on the mostly semaphore/searchlight-signaled NP.
