Indiana Harbor Belt
Hammond, Indiana (State Line Crossing)
June 17, 1972

This shot graphically illustrates what State Line Crossing, just west over the state line from Hammond, Indiana, looked like to one of the numerous railroads using the crossing. In order from nearest to furthest the lines crossed are Baltimore & Ohio, Nickel Plate Road (by now Norfolk & Western). Chicago & Western Indiana (carrying trains of the Monon, Chesapeake & Ohio, Erie and Wabash), Elgin, Joliet & Eastern and Chicago, South Shore & South Bend (with catenary). Remarkably one double-bladed semaphore at each end is enough to control the IHB's movements through the crossing. This view looks due north.
