Denver & Rio Grande Western
Colorado (Animas River Canyon)
June 13, 1970

Many casual riders behind steam don't realize that water is even more important than fuel to a steam locomotive (lack of water doesn't just mean the locomotive "runs out of steam," but can also trigger a catastrophic boiler explosion). Provision of regular watering facilities, such as this on on the Denver & Rio Grande Western's narrow gauge Durango-Silverton, Colorado line, was a must. Note the classic slogans on the water tank.
