No doubt there's an interesting story behind this derelict bridge alongside the Denver & Rio Grande Western's narrow gauge line between Durango and Silverton, Colorado; unfortunately the photographer doesn't know the details. Most likely a newer, more secure bridge was needed against the Animas River's periodic floods. This is just north of Deadwood Gulch; even today (2018) the remains of the former bridge can be seen in satellite views.
