Denver & Rio Grande Western [Southern Pacific]
Colorado (Royal Gorge)
June 3, 1996

This shot provides a clearer view of the construction method used for the Denver & Rio Grande Western's "hanging bridge" at the bottom of the Royal Gorge. At this point the Arkansas River maintained a monopoly on the available space, leaving no other alternative than to literally blast a notch out of the sheer cliffside. This view is from the station at the bottom of the incline railway.
