Chicago, Illinois boasts one of the best transit systems in the country, and its core is the Loop: an elevated line that completely encloses the heart of the downtown business district. But be aware that it's called the "L", not the "el" (just thought you ought to know). At one time these rails also hosted interurban trains of the Chicago, North Shore & Milwaukee and the Chicago, Aurora & Elgin (the "Roarin' Elgin"), long since fallen to freeway construction and automobile competition.
