A view from above of some of the Cass Scenic Railroad facilities, with Shay #5 in the foreground. This locomotive was actually built for the West Virginia Pulp & Paper Co. in 1905, ancestor of the Cass Scenic Railroad, and was the oldest of the CSR's working locomotives.
The CSR shops had just experienced a disastrous fire the previous month, with $300,000 worth of damage and loss of parts and tools as well as damaging Shay no. 9. Yet to come was the conflagration which consumed the ex-Chesapeake & Ohio station on May 5, 1975.
