Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe
Chicago, Illinois (Union Station)
June 3, 1973

Two years after the inception of Amtrak the Super Chief has been relegated to Santa Fe freight diesels, although a few warbonnet units remain in the consist. From the Roosevelt Road bridge we see Amtrak's Super Chief leaving Chicago's Union Station, with the Amtrak coach yards seen on the left. In another year the Santa Fe will withdraw permission to use the Super Chief name, claiming service was no longer up to Santa Fe standards, after which Amtrak renamed it the Southwest Chief.

The giant bascule bridges in the distance carry the St. Charles Air Line to Illinois Central's Central Station and the Baltimore & Ohio's passenger line to Grand Central Station (demolished by this time).
