Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe
Chicago, Illinois (Twenty-First Street Crossing)
June 3, 1973

By 1973 Amtrak was using Santa Fe cowl units in freight colors for the Super Chief, here seen inbound at 21st Street Crossing. In the past Santa Fe passenger trains would have continued straight through the crossing and continued on to Dearborn Station via the Chicago & Western Indiana, but by now were making the turn north onto the former Pennsylvania mainline (seen at the far left) to reach Union Station. In 1974 the Santa Fe will withdraw permission to use the Super Chief name, resulting in a temporary name change to Southwest Limited.
