Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe
Chicago, Illinois (Ash Crossing)
July 27, 1971

These warbonnet-clad F's leading the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe's eastbound Texas Chief through Chicago's Ash Crossing will soon be replaced by units wearing Amtrak's red, white and blue colors. With the cessation of railroad-sponsored passenger service on the Santa Fe, the warbonnet scheme will be phased out as quickly as possible, with only blue and yellow freight units to be seen (the last unit wearing the "warbonnet" scheme, an F7, was retired in August 1974). It will be 1989 before the famous silver and red scheme will return, thanks to then-Santa Fe president Mike Haverty.
