Wabash [Norfolk & Western]
Hannibal, Missouri
May 25, 1975

Upon crossing the Mississippi River at Hannibal, Missouri the Wabash immediately crossed the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy's line along the west bank of the Mississippi River via a diamond crossing, dove into a tunnel just behind the photographer and swung north (right) to connect with the CB&Q's line. Note the racks for delivering train orders; this was probably a very busy tower before the days of consolidated train dispatching. At one time both the Wabash and the Burlington used the bridge, with a Burlington east bank line joining the Wabash on the other side of the river at East Hannibal and another diverging to head west near the mouth of Bear Creek, both long since abandoned.
