Another view of the abandoned 1868 Union Pacific line over Sherman Hill, again at Hermosa, Wyoming. The original plan was to abandon this line as soon as the new one was completed (in 1901), but a derailment that tied up the new main convinced UP management to retain the old line as disaster insurance. It was finally pulled up in 1918.
