Such alterations in the landscape as railroad grades can last a very long time in the arid climate of Wyoming. The Union Pacific's original 1868 line over Sherman Hill was abandoned in 1918, but in 1997 was still easy to discern, for example as seen here at Hermosa, Wyoming.
