Just south of Laramie, Wyoming the eastbound UP mainline splits into two lines: the original line built in 1868 and a newer (1901) line with better grades. The two lines merge again at Hermosa to continue east over Sherman Hill. Here facing west at the Hermosa Road grade crossing the impressive signaling is evident, appropriate for such a heavily used junction.
