Union Pacific
Cheyenne, Wyoming
September 30, 1997

Unlike its relatively limited facilities at Laramie, Wyoming, the Union Pacific maintained a substantial classification yard at Cheyenne, due not only to the river of traffic coming off the three tracks over Sherman Hill but also trains to and from Denver to the south. Here an eastbound freight is leaving the east end of the yards, seen facing west from the Logan Avenue overpass. The UP's acquisition of Chicago & North Western in April 1996 is evidenced by lead unit no. 8700 still in C&NW paint.
