The Union Pacific posessed a heavy-duty double-track mainline (part of the former Oregon Short Line) to handle its traffic between Ogden and Salt Lake City, Utah. Layton, located between the two, provided a fine show of busy freights at its grade crossing with what today is N 2200 W. Here a southbound is about to pass the camera; this view faces north.
