Here on the west side of the Cuyahoga River Alco no. 2855 and an unidentified GP lead a westbound Norfolk & Western freight through Cleveland, Ohio on the former Nickel Plate. This train has just finished crossing the Cleveland Flats on the Nickel Plate's massive viaduct and vertical lift bridge; the overpass and truss bridge in the distance cross Willey Avenue and Abbey Avenue, respectively. It was at about this time that the Norfolk & Western began moving from blue to black for its locomotives, due to plans for a Chesapeake & Ohio/Norfolk & Western merger in response to the Penn Central merger; the PC collapse quickly put an end to such plans. This view is from the U.S. State Route 42 (25th Street) bridge looking northeast.
