Although the Union Pacific maintained a heavy-duty double-track mainline between Salt Lake City and Ogden, the Denver & Rio Grande Western also had a line between the two cities, providing access to the Southern Pacific's Donner Pass line. By 1996 the Southern Pacific (now owned by D&RGW) had trackage rights over the UP between the two and the D&RGW line was out of service, as evidenced by the condition of the flangeways in this grade crossing at N 2200 W and E 2200 S in Layton, Utah, here seen looking northwest.
