Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific
Englewood, Illinois (Englewood Station)
July 26, 1971

Once a fashionable and active station, by 1971 Englewood Station (several miles due south of the Loop) was disused and in a badly decaying area. Here the Pennsylvania Railroad's main line to Union Station crossed the Rock Island's line to Joliet and west; in addition, until 1968 the New York Central's passenger trains swung north to join the Rock Island just north of here for the run into La Salle Street Station. The Central's main from Gary to here was already mostly abandoned in favor of the Pennsy's line and former New York Central trains now terminated in Union Station.

Here the Rock Island main (looking north towards La Salle Street Station) is seen from Amtrak westbound train no. 69 on Penn Central (former Pennsylvania) rails. The Central's connecting line and platform canopies can be seen at the far right.
