If there was anything that characterized the last days of the "real" Southern Pacific (before its purchase by the Denver & Rio Grande Western) it was the thickness of the grime on its locomotives. Here two units in need of a bath pass through Colton Crossing; the lead unit is in the ill-fated "Kodachrome" scheme intended to facilitate repainting after the Southern Pacific/Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe mergerthat never happened.
