Although everyone's heard of the Soo Line, how many know that the complete name was the Minneapolis, St. Paul & Sault Ste. Marie? Sault in this context is pronounced "soo" of course, giving the road its popular nickname. In 1961 Soo, newly merged with the Wisconsin Central and Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic and officially renamed "Soo Line," decided to update its image, adopting the huge black "SOO" on a white background, with bright red ends for an extra fillip; it's definitely hard to miss and is even easily recognized from the air.
