Denver & Rio Grande Western

Denver & Rio Grande Western [Union Pacific]
Radium, Colorado
October 2, 1997

The little town of Radium, Colorado originally acquired its name from the radium mining carried out in the early twentieth century. Today its main industry is cattle. Here a westbound freight is working its way upgrade on the long haul to the Moffat Tunnel as it crosses Grand County Route 11. Ahead are Gore and Byers Canyons. Union Pacific has been the proud owner of the Denver & Rio Grande Western (operating under the name Southern Pacific since the 1988 merger) since September, but the units are still wearing the flashy Southern Pacific paint scheme.
