The Baltimore & Ohio's Marietta & Cincinnati mainline across south central Ohio at one time passed through the town of Athens, home of Ohio University. This line at one time cut directly through the campus. The line between Greenfield, Ohio and Athens was abandoned in 1985; the remainder of the line from Athens to Parkersburg in 1991.
