Chicago's famed 21st Street Crossing was clearly past its peak of greatness when this shot was taken from Amtrak's unnamed New York-Chicago train no. 69 (the Lake Shore Limited moniker was only applied after the train's discontinuance and later reinstatement). At far left is the by this time nearly abandoned Chicago & Western Indiana line into Dearborn Station, and the Illinois Central's rails connecting the IC's Iowa line to the lakefront was not in much better shape. Only the Santa Fe's passenger yard is relatively weed-free, still used by Amtrak. Train no. 69 is on former Pennsylvania rails at this point.
