Another view of the "old mainline" further east of West Crookton, looking downgrade in the direction of Ash Fork. This was the steeper of the two lines; the other (out of sight at the right) used several sharp curves and a tunnel to reduce the grade, though not by much. The Santa Fe's distinctive reddish ballast in this region makes the grade easy to spot in the arid desert.
