Denver & Rio Grande Western [Union Pacific]
Steamboat Springs, Colorado
September 29, 1997

David Moffat never accomplished his goal of building a line from Denver to Salt Lake City, but he did open up a significant region in northwest Colorado, ultimately reaching Craig with its extensive coal reserves. Known as the Craig Branch since the opening of the Dotsero Cutoff provided an alternative route to Salt Lake, the line still carried a significant tonnage of coal in 1997, by now under Union Pacific ownership.
