Denver & Rio Grande Western [Southern Pacific]
Canon City, Colorado
June 3, 1996

Sometimes called the "Gateway to the Royal Gorge," Canon City has quite a famous railroad history, being the site of one of the most notorious pitched battles between railroad contruction crews (in this case the Denver & Rio Grande, minus the "Western," and the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe). Ironically, the Santa Fe won but then lost in court after a long and complex legal battle. Although no longer used by the D&RGW, this magnificent station at Canon City testifies to the importance the railroad placed in the town.
