1973

Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe
Chicago, Illinois (Twenty-First Street Crossing)
June 3, 1973

The Texas Chief is heading out of Union Station on its way to the Southwest, and in spite of early Amtrak operation still looks elegant. The tracks belong to the Pennsylvania Railroad (now Penn Central), which is why position light signals guard this crossing of the South Branch of the Chicago River. Prior to Amtrak this train would have used Chicago & Western Indiana rails to reach Dearborn Station instead. In another year the Texas Chief will be renamed the Lone Star, and it lasted under that name until 1974.
