
Lamont Downs: VITA
Lamont Downs was born in Warren, Ohio in 1951. He received his BM 
('72) and MM ('74) in composition from the Eastman School of 
Music, where he studied composition with Samuel Adler and Warren 
Benson, and conducting with Donald Hunsberger. His Sinfonia I for 
Wind Band (1969) was awarded the 1970 Howard Hanson Prize for 
Wind Ensemble Composition. In 1994 he composed E7A (Concert
March) on commission from the Massachusetts Instrumental
Conductors Association (MICA), which was premiered by the 1994 
MENC All-Eastern Band under the direction of Donald Hunsberger.
From 1977 until 2010 he worked in the Western U.S., primarily in 
in a university library cataloging music scores. He has resided in the Southeast
since retiring in 2010. Current interests include 
music, 
computers, 
cinema (especially 
Japanese animé), and 
photographing 
trains (not necessarily in that order).
